What Are Impact Windows?

Your home should be your safe place. It's where you go when you need some peace and quiet. Not only do you need it to be your oasis and sanctuary, but you also need to know that you will be physically safe when you are in your home. That means you need to make sure that your house is as structurally sound as possible, including your windows. Windows can be a weak point in your house since glass is breakable. However, there is something you can do that will help make your windows less of a weak point. That is to install impact windows.

Impact Windows

These windows are also called hurricane windows. These windows are shatter-resistant and can withstand debris thrown at them by hurricane-force winds and people trying to break into your house. Keep in mind that shatter-resistant doesn't mean shatterproof. The windows can be shattered, but how they are constructed still keeps you safe.

Impact Window Glass

The glass in the windows is laminated glass. That means it is at least two layers of glass with some adhesive in between them. For impact windows, that is most commonly polyvinyl butyral. When the glass does shatter, the PVB continues to grip the glass so the shards don't go flying. If the outer layer of the glass gets broken, the inner layer of glass can still be whole because the energy was expended against the outer layer of glass and the PVB. That helps to keep your family safe in a tornado or hurricane because you aren't going to have to deal with shards of glass flying around. But that's not all that makes impact windows as secure as they are.

Frames

The frames of impact windows are reinforced so that they are more robust. There's no point in having shatter-resistant impact glass if the frames are weak and vulnerable. Those reinforced frames make it harder to get the windows installed. If you want to have impact windows, you should find an expert who can help you pick the ones that will work best for your house and install them.

You want your house to be as safe as possible. That means eliminating weak points like your windows. One way to do that is to install impact windows in your house. They can withstand severe storms and anyone trying to break into your house. That means you will be safer, and so will your family.
